Introduction Sericulture Course
Sericulture is the technique of producing silk. This activity includes cultivation of mulberry, rearing silkworm and post cocoon activities leading to production of silk yarn. India ranks the second position as largest raw silk producer after China and the biggest consumer of raw silk and silk fabrics. Apart from silk, sericulture also results to the production of several other by-products. The leaves are used to make ayurvedic and herbal medicines whereas mulberry fruits are rich constituent of minerals and vitamins. Woods of mulberry trees act repellent to termites and the timber is used for making sports items, toys etc. After feeding the silkworm the branches of mulberry trees are generally dried and used as fuel. The leaf of mulberry is used as a fodder for cattle. As long as human desire for silk garments continues, the demand for Sericulture exists.
Nature of Work:
The various activities involves in Sericulture result in increase in employment. The works required in sericulture is harvesting of leaves, rising of Silkworm, spinning out or staggering of silk yarn and weaving. The nature of work in sericulture is that the workers are required to work in division. They have to work for about 12-16 hours a day. While the cocoons are put in hot water to loosen fibers, workers tend to put their bare hands inside to see if the fibers are relaxed.
The minimum education requirement for one to opt career in sericulture is to pass High School Exam with Science. For admission in Postgraduate Courses Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Sericulture or any other Agricultural field.
